The First Year Emerald Laurel Ring was made for the widow who has survived the first year — and who thinks of that survival as a kind of victory that nobody else gets to name for her.
A half-crown of lab-created emerald leaves arches across the top of the band. Each leaf is a marquise-cut emerald — about 5 by 3 millimeters — set pointing outward, the way laurel leaves point away from the stem. Ten or twelve of them, rising from smaller to larger toward the center. A single small CZ stone marks the middle where the crown peaks. 18k gold plating holds the leaves. The laurel is classical — Greek, Roman, what people wore when they came back from long journeys.
When I imagine you wearing it, I imagine the morning of the one-year mark. Not a party. Not a speech. Just you, in front of the bedroom mirror, putting the ring on for the first time. The half-crown of emerald leaves rests across your finger. You don't tell anyone what it means that day. You know.
