The Story of This Piece

The Keepsake Pendant (Paw Print, Silver) was made for the woman whose dog died — last month, last year, six years ago — and who is tired of being told "it was just a dog."

I made it simple on purpose. A small sterling silver heart, with a paw silhouette cut out of the center. The paw is negative space — light passes through it. The heart is solid. No stones, no engraving, no ornament. A fine rolo chain holds it at the collarbone.

When I imagine you wearing it, I imagine the walk. The route you did with him every morning for twelve years. You do it alone now, and you still go. Halfway through, your hand goes up to the pendant without you meaning it to. You don't stop walking. You keep going.
