The First Year Emerald Leaf Ring was made for the widow whose garden kept growing even when she couldn't bring herself to weed it — and who noticed, one morning, that the ivy had climbed the back fence on its own.
The ring is a crown of hand-detailed leaves wrapping all the way around the band. Each leaf is veined and curled, like a real one pressed into the metal. At the top, where the leaves meet, a large oval lab emerald sits held in a setting shaped from more leaves — three or four of them cupping the stone like it just dropped from the vine. 18k rose-gold plating over sterling silver. The green of the emerald and the green of the leaves are the same green, by design.
When I imagine you wearing it, I imagine the first spring after his death. You're standing at the back door with your coffee. The leaves on the ring catch the morning light. You look down, and for a second you can't tell which leaves are on your hand and which ones are on the fence. You put the coffee down and go get the shears.
