The First Year Hummingbird Threader Earrings were made for the widow who believes — or who wants to believe — that when a hummingbird shows up at her feeder, it's someone checking in on her.
Each earring is a tiny hummingbird caught mid-flight, wings back, beak forward, suspended from a fine threader chain. Sterling silver body with red enamel detail painted across the throat and chest. Small CZ stones set along the wings catch light when you move. The bird hangs about an inch and a half below your earlobe, so it swings when you turn your head. The threader is long enough to slide the chain through cleanly without tangling.
When I imagine you wearing them, I imagine planting the feeder in March, a year after he died. In April the first hummingbird arrives. You're standing at the kitchen window with the earrings in. The bird hovers at the feeder. The birds on your ears move when you move. You stand very still until it flies away.
