The First Year Pendant (Cardinal Remembrance) was made for the widow whose husband's favorite bird was the cardinal, or whose mother's was — the woman who already looks for red in the backyard every morning.
The pendant is a cardinal in profile — sterling silver body, red enamel detail on the feathers. Below the bird, a single small freshwater pearl hangs on a short link, like a tear. The chain is fine silver. There's a folk saying that a cardinal appears when angels are near — I didn't invent that, but I did make a piece you can wear when you want to believe it.
When I imagine you wearing it, I imagine a February morning. A cardinal on the fence outside the kitchen window. Your hand goes to the pendant without you meaning it to. You stand at the sink and watch the bird until it flies away.
