The First Year Ring (Emerald Solitaire) was made for the woman who has reached the end of the first year without him, and who has decided — quietly, on her own — that her second year will begin with something green.
I made this ring small and thin on purpose. The band is almost a thread of gold. The emerald sits at the top — a single oval stone, 5 by 7 millimeters, lab-created for color and clarity. Green is the color of new growth. The gold is warm so the stone reads cool against it. No halo, no side stones, nothing else asking for attention.
When I imagine you wearing it, I imagine the morning after the first anniversary of his death. You ordered it for yourself weeks ago. You open the box standing in the kitchen where you still keep two coffee mugs out of habit. You slide it onto your right hand — not the left, the right — and you don't tell anyone for three days.
